Ridgewood is a village with a busy downtown, the Central Business District, and quiet residential streets around it. Where the truck can stand, and for how long, depends on which of the two you are moving to or from. Here is what the Village and the Ridgewood Police publish, and how to use it on moving day.
Downtown: meter hours and the 3-hour limit
In the Village’s parking areas, kiosks and meters are active Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Parking is free on Sundays and on federal holidays. General parking has a 3-hour limit on the metered streets and in the lots, except the Cottage Place lot. Some streets also have 15-minute spaces. Payment is at the kiosk or through ParkMobile.
A downtown apartment move can take longer than three hours, so tell us early if you are moving into or out of the Central Business District. We look at the block and the building entrance and plan the loading spot and the order of the day around the posted limits.
No parking anywhere from 2 to 6 a.m.
The Ridgewood Police overnight parking portal says no vehicles may be parked on any public street or public parking lot between 2:00 and 6:00 a.m. Residents with extenuating circumstances, such as overnight guests or a driveway being paved, can request temporary permission on a nightly basis. Online requests are for passenger vehicles only; requests for box trucks, trailers and RVs must be called in to the Police Department at 201-652-3900, option 2. Permission can be withdrawn without notice in bad weather or when the DPW is plowing or salting.
For a normal one-day move this does not affect the crew, because we load and unload in daytime. It matters if you rent a truck or a trailer yourself and plan to keep it overnight.
Overnight permits for downtown residents
Residents of the Central Business District who do not get parking from their landlord (except those in the multi-family housing developments) can buy an Overnight Parking Permit at the Village Hall reception desk. It is valid from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. in specific places: the Prospect lot, the second level of the Hudson Street Garage, the Wilsey Square site and the Cottage Place lot. If you are moving into a downtown apartment, apply soon after you sign the lease.
Fall moves: leaf season
The Village announced that leaf season starts the week of October 12, 2026, with collection by area (A, B, C or D). If you move in the fall, check your area and keep the curb in front of the house clear on moving day, so the truck can park near the door. Questions go to the Streets Division at 201-670-5585; the main Village number is 201-670-5500.
Getting the truck to Ridgewood
Heavy trucks registered at 10,000 pounds or more with six tires or three or more axles are prohibited on the Garden State Parkway north of Interchange 105, which covers all of Bergen County. The truck comes in on other roads, so its timing can differ from your car. Details are in our guide on Why moving trucks stay off the Garden State Parkway in Bergen County.
