Moving to Paramus, NJ: Sunday Rules, Overnight Parking and Moving Day Tips

Updated October 11, 2026

Paramus is where Routes 4 and 17 meet, and it is best known for its shopping. For a household move, a few local rules matter more than the malls: when stores may sell furniture, when cars and trucks may stay on the street, and how garbage and leaves are collected. Here is what to plan for.

Sunday: no furniture or appliance sales in Bergen County

Bergen County still has a Sunday sales law. N.J.S.A. 2A:171-5.8 bans Sunday sales of clothing, building and lumber supplies, furniture, home, business or office furnishings, and household, business or office appliances. Food, gasoline and newspapers are among the exceptions. If the new home needs a mattress, a washer or a sofa, buy it and book the delivery for Monday to Saturday.

No street parking from 2 to 5 a.m.

The Paramus borough code says no one may park a vehicle on any borough street between 2:00 and 5:00 a.m. The police can give permission in extenuating circumstances. So a rental truck or trailer should not be left on the street overnight, and a two-day move should be planned so the truck is off the street at night. If your house has a driveway, tell us how long it is and whether it is shared or steep.

Getting the truck to your street

Paramus has Garden State Parkway ramps, but heavy trucks registered at 10,000 pounds or more with six tires or three or more axles cannot use the Parkway anywhere in Bergen County. The truck comes in on other roads, so its timing may differ from your own drive. Our guide on Why moving trucks stay off the Garden State Parkway in Bergen County explains the rule.

Fall moves: leaves and garbage

The Paramus DPW lists leaf collection from October 5 to November 29, 2026. If you move in the fall, keep the curb in front of the house clear of leaves and yard waste on moving day, so the truck can park close to the door. Kitchen garbage must be bagged and placed in the covered automated container at the curb, and the borough no longer collects garbage from other parts of the property. Computers and electronics are collected at the curb twice a month by schedule. The DPW number is 201-265-2100, extension 3100.

Hazardous waste day in Paramus

The Bergen County Utilities Authority holds a household hazardous waste collection at Bergen Community College, 400 Paramus Road, on Sunday, October 18, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (entry via Paramus Road only). It is free for Bergen County residents with ID. Bring old paint, solvents, gasoline and propane cylinders (1 lb and 20 lb) there instead of packing them. More in our guide to Getting rid of paint, propane and old furniture before a Bergen County move.

House moves: what to tell us

  • The number of floors, plus the basement, attic and garage.
  • Large items: sectional sofas, armoires, pianos, gym equipment, outdoor furniture and grills (empty the propane tank first).
  • The driveway, front steps and any narrow side doors.
  • Whether you need storage between homes because closing dates do not line up; see our Storage page.
