Why Moving Trucks Stay Off the Garden State Parkway in Bergen County

Updated October 11, 2026

If you live in Paramus, Saddle Brook or another town near the Garden State Parkway, you probably drive it every week. A full-size moving truck usually cannot. This guide explains the rule, where it comes from, and what it changes for a move that starts or ends in central or south Bergen County.

The rule in one sentence

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority, which runs the Parkway, says heavy trucks registered at 10,000 pounds or more, with six tires or with three or more axles, are prohibited north of Interchange 105. Interchange 105 is in Monmouth County, far south of Bergen. In practice, the whole Parkway in Bergen County is closed to these trucks.

You can see it in the Authority’s 2026 truck toll table: the Bergen-area toll points (Pascack Valley, Bergen, Paramus and Saddle Brook) list rates for buses only. There is no truck rate there, because trucks are not allowed.

Which moving trucks it covers

The box trucks used for most full-home moves have dual rear wheels, which means six tires, and they are registered above 10,000 pounds. So the rule applies to them. A car, a minivan or a small cargo van is a different story, which is why your own drive on moving day may follow a different road than the truck.

How the truck gets around instead

The crew plans the drive on roads that allow trucks, such as Interstate 80 and the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95), and then local streets to your door. That is why the time in our plan can differ from what a map app shows for a car. For a move inside Bergen County, the difference is often small. For a longer trip, it matters more, and we plan the arrival window around it.

Moving from Bergen County to the Jersey Shore

South of Interchange 105, heavy trucks may use the Parkway. The same 2026 toll table lists truck rates at southern plazas such as Toms River, Barnegat and Cape May. For a move to Ocean, Atlantic or Cape May County, the truck reaches the southern part of the Parkway by other roads and can use it from there. Give us both addresses and we build the plan and the arrival time around that route.

Moving to Rockland County or further north

The Palisades Interstate Parkway starts in Bergen County and runs into Rockland and Orange counties in New York. It is on the list of parkways that trucks must stay off in the NYC DOT brochure “Stay off of State Parkways”, which also warns that some parkway bridges have clearances as low as 6 feet 11 inches. A moving truck heading north uses truck routes such as the New York State Thruway instead.

Moving between Bergen County and New York City

New York City closes its parkways to commercial vehicles too, including the Henry Hudson Parkway north of 59th Street and the Belt Parkway. Inside the city, trucks follow designated truck routes, and NYC DOT changed that network on October 4, 2026. Our guide to the NYC truck route changes (October 4, 2026) explains what changed, and the guide on Moving from NYC to New Jersey covers the rest of a cross-Hudson move.

What this means for your moving day

  • Plan by truck time, not car time. If you need to meet the crew at the new home, agree on a time with us instead of using your own drive time.
  • Start early on longer moves. An early start keeps unloading in daylight when the truck takes the longer, truck-legal way.
  • Tell us about your street. Low branches, tight turns, a steep driveway or a dead-end block all change how the truck reaches your door.
  • Keep important things with you. Documents, medicine, keys and chargers ride in your car, not on the truck.

Common questions

Can a moving truck use the Garden State Parkway in Bergen County?

Not if it is registered at 10,000 pounds or more with six tires or three or more axles. The New Jersey Turnpike Authority prohibits those trucks north of Interchange 105, which covers all of Bergen County.

Where does the Parkway truck ban end?

At Interchange 105 in Monmouth County. South of it, heavy trucks may use the Parkway; the 2026 toll table lists truck rates at plazas such as Toms River and Cape May.

Can a moving truck use the Palisades Interstate Parkway?

No. It is on the NYC DOT list of parkways that trucks must stay off, and it starts in Bergen County.

Why is the mover’s drive time different from my map app?

The truck must use roads that allow trucks, such as Interstate 80 and the New Jersey Turnpike, so its route can differ from the one a car would take.
