NYC Truck Route Changes (October 4, 2026): What They Mean for Your Move

Updated October 10, 2026

New York City has nearly 1,000 miles of designated truck routes, and moving trucks follow them. On October 4, 2026, NYC DOT put a set of truck route changes into effect. Here is what that means for a household move.

How truck routes work for a move

NYC DOT rules say trucks with a stop inside a borough must use the designated local truck routes and may leave them only to reach their destination, by leaving the truck route at the point nearest the stop. A moving truck therefore plans its approach to your block, not just the shortest drive. Parkways such as the Belt, FDR Drive and Cross Island are closed to commercial vehicles altogether.

What changed on October 4, 2026

NYC DOT published the changes in the Rules of the City of New York and released a map and list of additions, removals and designation changes. Examples:

  • Manhattan: additions include West 30th Street between Broadway and 5th Avenue and 5th Avenue between 14th and 31st Streets; removals include Broadway between West 31st Street and East 14th Street.
  • Queens: additions include 38th Avenue between Northern Boulevard and Vernon Boulevard; removals include Thomson Avenue between Jackson Avenue and 44th Drive.
  • Brooklyn: additions include Bushwick Avenue between Metropolitan Avenue and Grand Street.
  • The Bronx: removals include Third Avenue between East 189th Street and East Fordham Road.

NYC DOT says a new truck route map is coming; until then, the list of changes is the reference.

What it means for you

For most moves, nothing changes on your side: the crew plans the route. It can change where the truck approaches your building and, on some blocks, where it can stop. If your street was a truck route and was removed, or the other way around, tell your mover so they plan the last few blocks.

Plan the curb

Tell us about hydrants, bus stops, bike lanes and driveways near your door, and about building loading docks. On alternate side parking suspension days, parked cars tend to stay all day, so an early start helps.
