Moving in Garfield or Lodi, NJ: Truck Parking, Overnight Rules and Permits

Updated October 11, 2026

Garfield and Lodi are two Bergen County towns with clear written rules about who may park on the street, when, and what size of vehicle. A moving truck has to fit those rules, and so does your own car after you move in. Here is what the two towns publish, and how we plan around it.

Garfield: the oversized vehicle rule

The City of Garfield says no vehicle longer than 22 feet and wider than eight feet, including vans and trucks, may park on any city street between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. During those hours, such a vehicle may stand only to load or unload, for no more than 15 minutes.

Some Garfield streets have no oversized truck parking at any time, on both sides, including Bogart Avenue (Midland Avenue to River Drive), Passaic Street (River Drive to Frederick Street), Columbus Avenue (its whole length), Jewell Street (Outwater Lane to Lanza Avenue), Hobart Place, Lincoln Place, Marsellus Place and Spencer Place. If your home is on one of these blocks, tell us when you ask for the estimate so we can plan where the truck stands.

Garfield: everyday parking rules that matter on moving day

The city lists the basics: no parking within 25 feet of an intersection or 10 feet of a fire hydrant, or in yellow-marked areas, and no blocking crosswalks. Some business streets have time limits, for example two hours from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Saturday, on parts of Midland Avenue and Palisade Avenue. A full move usually takes longer than that, so we look at the block before the day and pick the legal spot closest to your door.

Garfield: overnight parking and permits for new residents

Any vehicle parked on a Garfield street between 3:00 and 6:00 a.m. needs a parking permit. Permits are applied for online, and the city lists what it needs: a NJ registration and insurance card showing your Garfield address (or the MVC online address-change confirmation), proof of residence dated within 60 days, and a Dwelling Certificate for the unit. Rental units in homes built before 1978 also need a Lead-Safe or Lead-Free certificate. Residents of buildings with five or more units built after January 1, 2020 are not eligible. Until your permit is active, the city offers an overnight visitor pass, which must be bought before 3:00 a.m. for that night.

Lodi: resident-only streets from 1 to 5 a.m.

From 1:00 to 5:00 a.m. every day, all streets in the Borough of Lodi are “Resident Parking Only” (Borough Ordinance 194-16). Residents need a parking permit sticker, applied for online; tenants must upload a Certificate of Occupancy that lists them as tenants, and stickers are not issued to cars with temporary plates. Visitors who need to park overnight submit an online request. For moving day, this means no rental truck or trailer should be left on a Lodi street overnight, and your own car needs its sticker soon after you arrive.

Lodi and Garfield: garbage after the move

Lodi collects garbage by zone: Zone 1 on Monday and Thursday, Zone 2 on Tuesday and Friday. Bulky items go out with regular garbage after 6:00 p.m., two per collection day, and whole-house cleanouts above the limits are not collected. In Garfield, garbage may not go to the curb before 4:00 p.m. the day before collection, and metal and appliances are picked up by appointment on Thursdays. Our guide to Getting rid of paint, propane and old furniture before a Bergen County move has the details.

How we plan a Garfield or Lodi move

  • We ask for the exact address, the floor, the stairs and whether there is a driveway at each end.
  • We check whether the block has time limits or no-truck rules, and plan the closest legal place to load.
  • We start in the morning, so loading and unloading happen in daytime, well outside the overnight restrictions.
  • You get a free written estimate before moving day that lists what is included.
