Bergen County has 70 municipalities, and each one sets its own parking, permit and garbage rules. A move from Hackensack to Paramus, or from Lodi to Maywood, is short on the map, but your address, your parking and your trash day all change. Use this checklist for the weeks around the move.
1. Hire a licensed New Jersey mover
A move that starts and ends in New Jersey is an intrastate move. The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs says state law requires these movers to be licensed by the Division and to give customers a written estimate. Our New Jersey public mover license is NJPM 000930, and for moves to other states we hold U.S. DOT No. 967970, MC-432549.
2. Change your address with the MVC within one week
The NJ Motor Vehicle Commission says N.J.S.A. 39:3-36 requires drivers to report an address change within one week. The MVC prefers the online system; you need an e-mail address and you get a confirmation letter at the end. Keep it: some towns accept it as proof of your new address, for example for a Garfield parking permit. You can also mail the request with a signed letter, a copy of your license and proof of the new address.
3. Update your voter record
When you change your address online with the MVC, you are asked whether you want the change to update your voter record; answer “Yes”. The MVC notes that the voter registration deadline is 21 days before an election (for the November 3, 2026 general election, that is October 13). If you do not get a confirmation, contact your local Commissioner of Registration.
4. Learn the overnight parking rule in the new town
Rules differ a lot inside the county:
- Paramus: no parking on any borough street from 2 to 5 a.m.
- Ridgewood: no parking on public streets or lots from 2 to 6 a.m.; temporary permission by request.
- Lodi: all streets are resident parking only from 1 to 5 a.m.; residents need a permit sticker.
- Garfield: any car on the street from 3 to 6 a.m. needs a permit; oversized vehicles are barred from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Apply for a permit as soon as you have the documents, so your car is legal from the first night.
5. Renting? Ask about the certificates
Some towns ask for proof that a rental unit has its certificate. Lodi asks tenants applying for a parking permit to upload a Certificate of Occupancy that lists them; Garfield asks for a Dwelling Certificate. Under New Jersey’s lead-safe law (P.L. 2021, c. 182), rental units in dwellings built before 1978 must be inspected for lead-based paint hazards at tenant turnover or every three years, unless an exemption applies. Ask the landlord for these papers before moving day.
6. Find your new garbage and recycling days
Collection days and curb times change with the town. Lodi uses zones (Monday and Thursday, or Tuesday and Friday). Rochelle Park does not allow containers at the curb before 6:00 p.m. the day before collection or after 8:00 p.m. on collection day. Paramus uses covered automated containers. Several towns, including Lodi and Rochelle Park, point residents to the Recycle Coach app for schedules. For the old home, see Getting rid of paint, propane and old furniture before a Bergen County move.
7. Plan purchases around the Sunday law
Bergen County bans Sunday sales of furniture, home furnishings, household appliances, clothing and building supplies (N.J.S.A. 2A:171-5.8). Book new-furniture deliveries for Monday to Saturday.
8. Book the move with the details
Send both addresses, floors, stairs or elevators, driveways and big items. For a move between two Bergen towns, that is usually enough for a free written estimate. If the dates do not line up, ask about Storage. For other paperwork, see The guide to address changes during a move.
Common questions
How soon must I change my address after moving within New Jersey?
Within one week. The NJ MVC cites N.J.S.A. 39:3-36 and recommends its online address-change system.
Does an MVC address change update my voter registration?
It can. When changing your address online, answer “Yes” to updating your voter record. The registration deadline is 21 days before an election.
Does a mover need a license for a move between two New Jersey towns?
Yes. The NJ Division of Consumer Affairs says intrastate movers must be licensed by the Division. Ours is NJPM 000930.
Do Bergen County towns have different overnight parking rules?
Yes. For example, Paramus bans street parking from 2 to 5 a.m., Ridgewood from 2 to 6 a.m., Lodi makes streets resident-only from 1 to 5 a.m., and Garfield requires a permit from 3 to 6 a.m.
