New York to Washington or Baltimore is one of the most common long-distance moves on the East Coast. It is a one-day drive for the truck, but the rules at both ends and the federal paperwork decide how smooth it is.
Federal rules for an interstate move
A move from New York to another state is interstate, so federal rules apply. The mover must have a U.S. DOT number (ours is 967970, MC-432549), and under a non-binding estimate FMCSA says the mover cannot require more than 110 percent of the estimate at delivery, with limited exceptions. Read the FMCSA booklet “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move”.
Parking a moving truck in Washington, DC
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) says a moving truck parked on a DC street needs a public space permit, applied for through its online TOPS system, kiosks or the permit office. Emergency No Parking signs come with the permit, and DDOT says they must be posted 72 hours before the truck arrives at unmetered spots, or 24 hours ahead at metered spots. DDOT asks you to allow time for processing, so apply early and check the current rules on TOPS.
Baltimore and Maryland
In Baltimore, rules for parking a moving truck depend on the street and the building. Ask your building or the city about curb space before moving day, and tell us about loading docks, elevators and move hours at the new address.
Buildings at both ends
Apartment buildings in New York and in Washington usually want a booked move time, a reserved service elevator and a certificate of insurance (COI). Ask both buildings for their sample COI. We send the COI each building asks for.
Plan the timing
Most of the route runs on the New Jersey Turnpike and I-95. Pick a delivery day that matches your new building rules, and keep documents, medicine and valuables with you. If your new home is not ready, ask about storage between homes.
